I, and most pagans, prefer to define paganism by what it is. Pagan is a word that used to mean "rural" or "outsider", especially in regard to Christianity. Nowadays, it encompasses many different beliefs involving nature and ancient religions. Most paganism is polytheistic -- involving many gods or goddesses, earth-based, and reverent of nature and the cycle of the seasons. A lot of pagan beliefs are traditional--that is, they can be traced back to pre-Abrahamic faiths. Some examples of traditional religions are Druidic (Celtic), Hellenic (Greek), African Traditional Religions, Kemetic (Egyptian), Sumeric, Babylonian, and Norse.
